the archive started loosly around August / late summer / fall of 2002.

as far as 'first show' ?

the RSS 'see recent additions' link:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%28%28collection%3Aetree%20OR%20mediatype%3Aetree%29%20AND%20NOT%20collection%3AGratefulDead%29%20AND%20-mediatype%3Acollection&sort=-publicdate

shows at the VERY beginning Ekoostik Hookah Live at Buckeye Lake Music Center - Hookahville XI on 1999-05-29 - Ekoostik Hookah

but that shows 2006 as the upload date. the 2002-uploaded era stuff has a different date system that they used for the files back then, so the actual 'first' show is hard to figure out. probably some jam band, as they were all that were allowed at the time / first to be set up.

The initial uploading of shows was done differently: It was closer to what the etree.org ftp sites were like then (or bt.etree.org is now), with people putting up bands that fans knew were generally OK with the idea of trading.

But since this was a bigger and more permanent site (at a huger scale than anyone was used to), the uploading was rolled back after a bit to the bands-opt-in way we do things to this day. The earliest rounds of OK's from bands included String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain Sting Band, and Eddie From Ohio.

Funny though, the "huge scale" then was still just about server "etree01". :)
